Geography

The teaching and learning of Geography is through themed units, which are incorporated into an overall two-year curriculum framework. Through the study of Geography, children are given opportunities to develop an awareness of their immediate surroundings, other places and how people have used their environment. Through this they will be introduced to the techniques necessary to undertake fieldwork and geographical enquiries. Children are encouraged to broaden their knowledge of places and environments throughout the world; develop an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem-solving skills both inside and outside the classroom. As pupils study Geography they encounter different societies and cultures.

Curriculum Statement for Geography

Intent

At St.Laurence we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their important place within it. The Geography curriculum at St. Laurence enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and also skills which are important in later life in developing care and consideration for our natural environment. Through Geography, we seek to inspire children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which we believe will remain with them for the rest of their lives.

Implementation

Geography at St. Laurence is taught throughout the year, so that children are regularly taught geographical units of work. Each unit is designed within a robust long-term plan, ensuring children build upon what they have learnt previously as they progress through the curriculum. This ensures lessons are relevant and take into account children’s prior knowledge or misconceptions. Consideration is given to how greater depth children will be taught, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion. Cross-curricular outcomes in Geography are planned in order to deepen children’s learning.

Impact

Through the immersion of these inspiring Geography units, children will progressively build upon their geographic skills and knowledge of key geographical vocabulary. They will learn about nurturing our planet sustainably with climate change, the global market, map reading and the geographical features and biomes across habitats, landscapes and populations across every continent of the world. Children will clearly demonstrate their progression within Geography units through a combination of summative and formative assessments, including multiple choice quizzes and extended writing outcomes.
