Our Curriculum
At St. Laurence Catholic Primary School, our curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that every child develops a deep and lasting understanding of the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. Our approach is informed by Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction and Cognitive Load Theory, amongst other educational theories, which are based on extensive research into how children learn most effectively.
We believe that knowledge is at the heart of learning. The curriculum clearly identifies the essential knowledge that children need to acquire, ensuring that all pupils build a strong foundation for future learning.
Knowledge is valued and specified
We carefully define the important knowledge, vocabulary, concepts and skills that children need to learn in every subject. By making this knowledge explicit, teachers can ensure that all children have access to a rich and ambitious curriculum.
Knowledge is progressively sequenced
Learning is planned in a logical sequence so that new knowledge builds upon what children have learned before. Concepts are introduced step by step, allowing pupils to make connections, deepen their understanding and gain confidence as they move through the school.
Knowledge is taught to be remembered
We know that learning is most effective when knowledge is securely stored in long-term memory. Teachers regularly revisit and review previously taught learning through retrieval practice, questioning and carefully planned opportunities to recall and apply knowledge. This helps children remember more and make meaningful links across their learning.
