Design & Technology

Design & Technology helps to prepare pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. Children are helped to develop the skills that enable them to think creatively and imaginatively to design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts.

Curriculum Statement for DT (Design and Technology)

Intent

The Design and Technology (DT) curriculum at St Laurence is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. It encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At St Laurence Catholic Primary School, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers.

Implementation

DT at St Laurence is interwoven into our IPC units of work throughout the year, so that children are regularly being taught DT units of work. In line with our curriculum drivers, we ensure that the planned activities our children undertake are challenging, motivating, relevant and enjoyable. Our DT curriculum is taught through a thematic, creative approach with specific learning goals for international mindedness and for personal learning based on the IPC personal goals of cooperation, communication, thoughtfulness, respect, resilience and morality. Throughout units of learning, pupils have opportunities to analyse, evaluate, complete a design and create a final project that incorporates a wide range of taught skills. We develop our learners’ confidence in their work by providing continual support and encouragement.

Impact

The school environment at St Laurence celebrates children’s achievements in DT and demonstrates the importance of creativity in our school, with outcomes enhancing the indoor as well as the outdoor environment. Classroom displays also reflect the children’s sense of pride in their design work and this is also demonstrated by creative outcomes across the wider curriculum. The DT curriculum at St Laurence contributes to children’s personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection.
