CAFOD at St Laurence

As Cafod is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church we support its work. It is a member of Caritas International – a group of over 160 Catholic agencies from around the world – known as ‘the helping hand of the Church’. Because it works through the local Church it can reach people and places that others can’t.

At St Laurence’s we have our own trained Cafod volunteer, Mary Watkins, whose own children came to this school and who is an active member of the parish. The children dubbed her Mary Cafod some years ago and the name has stuck! She visits us at Harvest time and Lent to explain where Cafod is working and why and gives examples of how the money we raise is spent. Sometimes she works with individual classes and sometimes runs a lunchtime club.

Classes often fundraise for Cafod during Advent and Lent. The school also responds to particular campaigns such as forming a gardening club for Dig Deep, cycling with Tour de Fred and responding to Laudato Si”

2021-

As part of our Lenten fund raising we are supporting the CAFOD "Water Droplet" project which is helping communities, like the Afar region of Ethiopia have access to clean water. It is one of the hottest places on Earth. Water is scarce, and families have to make a five-hour round trip twice a day so that everyone has enough to wash with and to drink.

On Friday 26th February, CAFOD's Family Fast Day, a traditional day in the Lent season to think of others and to do what we can to help, the children wore blue clothes for a donation to CAFOD. We raised £118.81.
